- Growing TolumniasI love the thought of having mounted Tolumnias, but I'm scared! Let me explain. I do not have a greenhouse, nor do I have brightly lit areas inside the house. I travel on business quite frequently for a few days at a time. I live 20 miles from the Gulf Coast in Alabama where it is humid much of the time, can get very hot in season...and we also typically get a frost or two each winter....(this year we had a full week of temperatures in the teens all day which is not typical). I grow my orchids outside most of the year, but bring them inside for a couple months when night time temperatures get too low. These orchids are mostly Phalaenopsis and various Oncidium intergenerics. They survive, but do not flourish while inside, but do well outside. My perceived dilema is that I think mounted Tolumnias will do fine outside, but I am fearful for their survival inside during those winter months. ......so....I've played it safe (I think!) and placed each Tolumnia plant in a small terra-cotta pot (2") supported with some Spanish moss. I don't particularly like having the plant so deep in the pot but it seems this is necessary to keep the plant somewhat secure. Couple questions: Have I been too conservative with my concern for adequate humidity and the plants will suffer? What would be some early signs of trouble to head off pending disaster if too moist? If the plants thrive in the clay pots, will they be difficult to re-pot if needed? Any thoughts on preparation for over wintering my Tolumnias? All thoughts and suggestions are appreciated! - ArlanLike
- Say Hello!I'm relatively new to serious orchid growing and to date my knowledge of Tolumnias has been academic....until now. I just received my first order of these beauties. Looking forward to learning all I can from those who have gone before....! - ArlanLike
